The main entrance to The Hedberg located at Campbell and Collins Streets, offers lift and stair options to all venues. Wheelchair users can enter from level one, with accessible seating available throughout. Some companies offer Relaxed Performances which you can learn about here and Tactile tours which you can learn about here.

There are drop-off spaces available on Collins Street outside the entrance to The Hedberg to accommodate drop-off of wheelchair users or patrons with access needs.  There are also a number of short-term accessible car spaces available on Collins Street. Lift access is available from the main entrance on level one of The Hedberg building to all Theatre Royal and Studio Theatre foyers. For lift entrance to The Recital Hall please enter through the University of Tasmania entrance located at 19 Collins Street. 


The Theatre Royal and Studio Theatre have dedicated seating options for wheelchair users and their guests.
There are accessible seating options for the Theatre Royal available in the Stalls and Dress Circle. The Studio Theatre has seating options in the Stalls.

There are accessible bathrooms available on all levels of The Hedberg. There are both left hand transfer and right hand transfer access bathrooms available. Please enquire with staff on arrival. All access bathrooms also have baby change facilities. 


The Theatre Royal is a signatory to the Companion Card Scheme and accepts the Companion Card. Please contact the Box Office directly to make a Companion Card booking.


The Theatre Royal welcomes guests accompanied by guide, hearing or assistance dogs.


The Theatre Royal and the Studio Theatre are equipped with an Assistive Hearing System. This system can aid patrons with all levels of hearing impairment. The Assistive Hearing System offers amplified sound through dedicated headphones or by using a hearing loop that interacts with hearing aid devices. Any equipment needed can be booked and collected, free of charge, from the Box Office. There are a limited number of these units and bookings are essential. Please contact our Box Office to discuss your needs.


In our Relaxed Performances we focus on relaxing or adapting the theatre environment while maintaining the creative integrity of the show.

Relaxed Performances are for anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment. This can include, but is not limited to, people with autism, sensory sensitivities, Tourette's syndrome, learning disabilities or dementia, as well as people living with anxiety or people who have experienced trauma.


A Tactile Tour is a guided tour led by a creative or production team member of the show you are about to attend, allowing attendees to experience the work in various ways, including touch.

Tactile Tours allow attendees to fully immerse themselves in the production elements (set, costume, props, etc) prior to the commencement of the show, and is designed for people who experience of process the world in a different way (including people with low or no vision impairment/s, sensory processing disability/ies, and neurodivergence).


Theatre Royal auditoriums feature various seating types and sizes. Please contact the Box Office on 6146 3300 if you would like to discuss our chairs in more detail and book in according to your needs.  

Theatre Royal auditorium – Gallery 
All seats are wooden bench rows, with no armrests. 
Allocated bench space per guest 47cm. Depth of bench 44cm. 

Studio Theatre – Stalls and Balcony 
Chairs are adjoined in grouped rows with shared armrests. A small number of bariatric chairs are available on request and can be booked via the Box Office. The Studio Theatre has a range of chair widths between 47cm and 51cm. Please call the Box Office to book seating which will best suit you.
