Season 2023 Program Launch
The Theatre Royal is excited to launch its Season 2023 program today, with tickets now on sale.
For its 2023 program, the Theatre Royal has engaged some of the country’s most exciting productions and artists, telling stories and exploring issues that reflect our contemporary life and culture.
Ten Days on the Island’s major theatre event Women of Troy starring Marta Dusseldorp kicks off an incredible series of works highlighting powerful female voices. The line-up includes Suzie Miller’s award-winning Prima Facie, a recent smash-hit on London’s West End, and Dennis Kelly’s Girls & Boys, with a stellar performance from Justine Clarke. At the end of the year, Australian legend Robyn Archer performs her Australian Songbook.
A special centrepiece to the year will be pakana playwright Nathan Maynard’s timely and thought-provoking production about identity and history, At What Cost? It’s an extraordinary production from Sydney’s Belvoir St Theatre and the perfect counterpoint to Wesley Enoch’s classic First Nations musical The Sunshine Club.
The Theatre is also making a big commitment to experiences for children, young people and families next year. Stage adaptations of much-loved Australian authors Mem Fox and Andy Griffiths sit alongside a new Staycation school holiday program, which sees three Tasmanian companies presenting performances and delivering participatory workshop programs in each school break.
Of the 25 productions next year, half are Tasmanian, while flagship national companies are welcomed back to the island, including Sydney Dance Company and Bell Shakespeare.
Simon Wellington, Chief Executive of the Theatre Royal said he’s excited to bring the Theatre Royal and The Hedberg to life as a vibrant performing arts centre, with programming across multiple venues next year and the creation of a cultural hub for major festivals and events.
“The Theatre Royal is delighted to deliver such a diverse and dynamic program in 2023 with amazing local and international performances and a range of new initiatives that will make our program more accessible and affordable for audiences in Hobart.”
“We are also proud to continue developing strong relationships with Tasmanian artists and companies, supporting them to develop new work and attract new audiences.”
