SWANSONG - MEDIA RELEASE
Andre De Vanny, awarded Best Actor at the 2018 New York Theatre Festival, is coming to the Theatre Royal this Thursday 11 - Friday 12 with his award-winning performance in Swansong.
Andre de Vanny is an award-winning Australian actor who has worked extensively in Australia and the US for over 15 years. He began his career at a young age, starring in the international hit series Wicked Science. He has gone on to star in both major US and Australian productions, including David Fields’ directed feature The Combination 2.
Andre has appeared in major Australian television series, including Blue Heelers, MDMA, Canal Road, Rush, City Homicide, Killing Time, and most recently, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and The Doctor Blake Mysteries. Andre is also an established voice-over artist, currently performing in the animated series Nate is Late as well as having voiced major roles in Dogstar, Li’l Larrikins’ and The Flaming Thongs.
Set in the 1960s, Swansong tells the story of Austin (Occi) Byrne, the illegitimate child of a single mother in the Catholic west of Ireland. Shunned by church, state and family, Occi and his beloved Mammy are outcast and ostracized. After childhood bullying leaves him with mild brain damage Occi struggles to control his increasingly violent impulses as Mammy spirals ever further into alcohol abuse. It’s an exhilarating journey that plunges him into murder and mayhem, love and death, only to return him to the place where he began.
Transformed by the guttural and lyrical vernacular, Swansong is full of menace, grit and heartbreak soaked in alcohol and yearning, avoiding ghostly bodies and the tortured memory of mental institutions.
