Meet our Box Office Supervisor, Alice Moss
If you've been to the Theatre Royal at any point in the past decade, chances are you've met Alice Moss, one of our wonderful Box Office Supervisors! Let's get to know Al a little better.
Q: How long have you been working at the Theatre Royal?
A: I’ve just passed the 10-year mark!
Q: Why did you want to work here?
A: I had just finished a contract with Ten Days on the Island and had worked quite closely with the Theatre Royal Box Office and Front of House teams. They were so fantastic to work with that I wanted to be a part of their team. I've always loved coming to events at the Theatre Royal, so getting the chance to work here was very exciting.
Q: Tell us about your role!
A: I started as a casual Box Office Attendant and I am now a part-time Box Office Supervisor, as well as an Usher. Along the way I have acted in many other roles including Marketing Assistant, Front of House Manager and Customer Services Manager.
In a typical day you'll find me doing a bit of everything, from reconciling money, to setting up shows in the ticketing system, to fixing tricky ticketing issues. There's a lot of answering phone calls and emails from customers and companies. There is also usually some sort of morning tea involved.
Q: What’s your favourite thing about working here?
A: Definitely the amazing team of people that I work with, many of whom I think of as my second family. I’m also incredibly lucky that I get the opportunity to see some amazing productions.
Q: Do you remember the first performance you ever saw at the Theatre Royal?
A: Exitleft's production of Rent comes straight to mind. I was around 15, so I know it wasn’t the first thing I saw here but it’s my most vivid early memory. I hadn't even heard of Rent before I saw it here, but it was such an inspiring performance with an epic set and an amazing band and cast. I distinctly remember one of my friends sitting in her seat completely overwhelmed and sobbing after it had finished.
Q: What’s your go-to pre-show drink or snack?
A: Pagan cider and Maltesers.
Q: What's your favourite genre of theatre?
A: You may not guess it by looking at me, but I'm a HUGE musical theatre fan. I could watch Phantom of the Opera every day for the rest of my life.
Q: What's a fun fact about the theatre people may not know?
A: At the end of each day the Box Office staff are responsible for checking that all of the exit doors are locked. I am famously terrified of checking the fire exit door in the Gods (Gallery seating) in case of a visit from Fred the theatre ghost.
Q: Are you a coffee or tea kind of person?
A: Tea please, white and one.
Q: What's your favourite thing about Lutruwita/Tasmania?
A: I love that we have everything - mountains, beaches, rainforests - all so close to home. It's just so beautiful here. In and around Nipaluna/Hobart, I love going to Richmond to feed the ducks (duck food, not bread!) and visiting the lolly shop.
Q: What are you most looking forward to seeing as part of our 2023 Season? Or, what’s your favourite thing you’ve seen so far?
A: Prima Facie was next level incredible. One of the most amazing things I’ve seen in our venues. I’m really looking forward to JUST Live on Stage!, having read those books when I was growing up. I also never miss Bell Shakespeare or Sydney Dance Company when they’re in town.
