In Dulci Jubilo
Allegri Ensemble presents In Dulci Jubilo in the intimate setting of All Saints Church in South Hobart. This hour-long program presents beautiful Christmas music from the past 500 years in poignant juxtapositions of ancient and modern. The backbone of the concert features two Christmas cantatas by Dieterich Buxtehude (In Dulci Jubilo and Das Neugeborne Kindelein) and a delightful chorale setting (Wie Schön Leuchtet Der Morgenstern) by Buxtehude’s contemporary Christian Geist. Around these pieces, we present two seasonal motets by William Byrd (Beata Viscera, Hodie Christus Natus Est) and a variety of carols, old and new. Some of these will be familiar (Gabriel’s Message and The Cherry Tree Carol, for instance), and others will soon be much better-known. A highlight is a beautiful setting by Thomas Hewitt Jones of the 15th-century poem Lullay My Liking, commissioned by BBC Music Magazine in 2014. The concert includes a complimentary festive supper after the performance.
