ngayapi milaythina-ta. Born of country.
Presented by Daisy Allan, Annie Reynolds and Dewayne Everettsmith
From possibly sixteen languages originally spoken in Lutruwita/Tasmania, to near extinguishment following invasion, and sleeping for almost two hundred years, palawa kani has emerged as the language of Tasmanian Aborigines.
It is fundamental to Aboriginal community and cultural life and showcased in diverse forms by Aboriginal artists and performers. palawa kani is also shared with the public through a digital map of hundreds of place names. How did this happen? Where does the knowledge of the language come from?
The presentation gives background to the Tasmanian Aboriginal languages, the processes of retrieval and revival of palawa kani, and demonstrates the key palawa kani principles of accuracy and authenticity by exploring some place names.
