We welcome you to the 25th Anniversary and Celebration Final Concert of Tasmania’s iconic Southern Gospel Choir.  

The SGC exist because of our deep love and passion for African American gospel music.  

African American gospel music is uniquely African American, and yet it has found a significant resonance in Australian culture. In Tasmania, in particular, the connection with African American gospel music has been most profound, finding a powerful expression through our inspirational Southern Gospel Choir.  

Founded in Hobart at the University of Tasmania’s Conservatorium of Music in January 1999, the SGC has performed for a plethora of major international music festivals; it has performed for sell-out concerts around the world, and created some inspirational recordings with diverse international artists like Horace Boyer, Take 6, Michael Spiby, The Idea of North, Guy Sebastian, Christine Anu, Myron Butler, Silvie Paladino, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and many others.    

We celebrate a quarter of a century of musical passion and energy, spirit and fire that is the Southern Gospel Choir.  We also celebrate the closing of an era as we present this final concert – with some sadness yes, but with overwhelming joy for all that has been achieved together, over such a long time.   

So now, the SGC & Very Righteous Gospel Band wish to celebrate the power and exhilaration of African American gospel for one last time. Don’t be afraid to lose yourself in the experience. It’s all about being together in this moment and experiencing the uncontainable, irrepressible joy and spirit that is African American gospel music.
